Can I work without a TIE if I have a NIE?
Technically yes, but most employers require it. If your residence authorisation allows you to work and you have a NIE, you can do so; however, many employers and Social Security itself ask for the TIE as a physical accreditation document. Don’t wait until you have it to look for a job, but having it speeds everything up.
What do I do if my visa expires before I receive the TIE?
The application receipt is valid throughout the procedure. The NIE decision and the TIE receipt prove that you have applied correctly, even if you don’t yet have the physical card. Always carry that receipt together with your passport.
Is the NIE lost if I leave Spain?
It is not “lost”, but it stops having administrative effects. The number remains yours, but if you leave permanently your residence authorisation ends. If you leave Spain temporarily (less than a year), keep your authorisation valid.
Can I have a NIE from two countries at the same time?
The NIE is specific to Spain. Other countries have their own systems, so there is no conflict in having your Spanish NIE and your country’s identity document: they are separate records.
How long is the TIE valid for?
It matches your residence authorisation exactly: 1-3 years for temporary residence and 5 years for long-term residence. The TIE expires on the same day as your authorisation, so note the date and renew in advance.
Is the TIE mandatory or optional?
Mandatory if you have temporary or long-term residence authorisation. The law is clear: you must have it and apply for it within the month following the approval of your authorisation.
Does the TIE identify me abroad?
No. The TIE is a Spanish identity document, valid only within Spain. To travel abroad you need your passport.
What do I do if I lose my TIE?
- File a loss report with the National Police.
- They give you a report certificate.
- Apply for the duplicate by presenting that report.
- Within 2-3 weeks you will have the new card.
Do it quickly: without a TIE, administrative problems can arise.
Can I renew the TIE before it expires?
Yes, from 3 months before its expiry. It is advisable to do it as soon as possible, because timeframes lengthen depending on the time of year.
Do I need a lawyer to handle the NIE and the TIE?
It is not mandatory, but it helps speed up the process and avoid mistakes, especially if your situation is complex (changes of authorisation, administrative records) or you are not fluent in Spanish.
