How to get your NIE in Palma de Mallorca: complete 2026 guide

The NIE (Foreigner Identity Number) is one of the first procedures anyone who wants to live, work, study or carry out financial transactions in Spain will need. In this guide we explain, clearly and updated for 2026, what it is, what it is for and how to apply for it in Palma de Mallorca.

What is the NIE and what is it for?

The NIE is a personal, unique and permanent number that identifies foreigners in their dealings with the Spanish Administration. It is not the same as the residence card (TIE): the NIE is just the number.

You will need it for almost everything:

• Signing an employment contract or registering as self-employed.
• Opening a bank account.
• Buying or renting a home.
• Paying taxes or inheriting.
• Applying for any residence authorisation.

Who can apply for it?

Any foreigner with economic, professional or social interests in Spain can apply for the NIE. There are two main routes:

1. From Spain, by booking an appointment at an Immigration Office or National Police station.
2. From abroad, through the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in your home country.

Documents you need

In general, you will need:

• Form EX-15, completed and signed.
• Valid passport or ID document (original and copy).
• Proof of the reason for your application (job offer, contract, purchase…).
• Proof of payment of the 790-012 fee.

Tip: always bring the original and a copy of each document. A single missing paper can make you lose your appointment.
