Complete NIE guide: steps, documents and timeframes 2026

The Foreigner Identity Number (NIE) is, quite literally, your administrative passport in Spain. Without it you cannot work legally, open a bank account, sign a rental contract, access public healthcare or complete almost any official procedure.

Regulated by the Ley Orgánica 4/2000, the NIE is mandatory for any foreigner who is going to live in Spain for more than six months. In this guide we explain what it is exactly, how to apply for it, what documentation you need and how long it really takes.

What exactly is the NIE?

The NIE is an identification number made up of 8 digits plus a letter. It works as your national identity number in Spain. It is not a physical document on its own (that is the TIE), but a number that identifies you before:

• The Tax Authority (for taxes).
• Social Security (if you work).
• Banks and financial institutions.
• Local and regional authorities.
• Any public body.

Who needs a NIE?

Every foreigner who is going to live in Spain for more than six months must obtain one. In practice, you need it if:

• You are going to work (self-employed or employed).
• You are going to open a bank account.
• You are going to sign a contract (rental, purchase, loan…).
• You are going to access public healthcare.
• You are going to study at a university or official institution.
• You are going to apply for any administrative authorisation.

Step by step: how to apply for your NIE

Step 1: book an appointment online. The first thing is to request an appointment at the National Police in your province. Timeframes vary between 2 and 8 weeks depending on the region. In the Balearic Islands demand is high, so it is best to book an appointment as soon as possible.

Step 2: prepare the documentation. This is critical. If you arrive at your appointment without everything in order, they can reject you and you will have to start all over again.

Usual documentation:

1. Valid passport (original).
2. Official application (form EX-15).
3. Proof of address (rental contract, title deed…).
4. Municipal registration certificate (empadronamiento).
5. Proof of the reason (payslip, employment contract, sale and purchase, bank statement…).
6. In some cases, a criminal record certificate from your country of origin.

Practical tip: bring copies of everything. The National Police often asks for the original and a photocopy.

Step 3: appearance at the Immigration Office. The appearance is mandatory by law: you submit the documentation, they record your personal details and, in some cases, your fingerprint.

Step 4: administrative decision. If everything is correct, you will receive a favourable decision within 1-2 weeks.

Step 5: collecting the document. Once your application has been resolved, you collect your physical card at the same office.

Real timeframes: how long does it take?

• Appointment: 2-8 weeks (depending on province).
• Decision from the application: 1-2 weeks.
• Delivery of the card: 2-3 weeks more.
• Total ordinary timeframe: 30-45 days.

In the Balearic Islands, the usual time between appointment, decision and delivery is 2-3 months.

Costs

• Issuance fee (modelo 790, code 012): 18-25 €.
• Professional service (optional): 300-500 € if you hire comprehensive advice.

Common mistakes that delay your NIE

• Incomplete documentation. Check the official list before your appointment.
• Invalid proof of address. The rental contract must be properly accredited.
• Passport about to expire. It must be valid for at least 90 more days.
• Not being registered (empadronamiento). Register first in your municipality.
